Five Nigerian girls from Regina Pacies Secondary School, Onitsha, have won the gold medal at the World Technovation Challenge in Silicon Valley, San Francisco.
Every year, girls from all over the world are invited to identify a problem in their communities and are challenged to solve them by developing Andriod applications.
The team, made up of Promise Nnalue, Jessica Osita, Nwabuaku Ossai, Adaeze Onuigbo, and Vivian Okoye, bested representatives from the US, Spain, Turkey, Uzbekistan, and China.
Coached by Uchenna Onwuamaegbu-Ugwu, CEO of Edufun Technik STEM, the team won the challenge with a mobile application called the ‘FD-Detector’.
The team spent five months on research and development to help tackle the challenge of fake pharmaceutical products in Nigeria.
The girls will be attending field trips and workshops, including a networking session during their one week stay in the US.
“Congratulations! We are very proud of you,” Acting President Yemi Osinbajo tweeted when he received the news.
