The All Progressives Congress (APC) caucus in the House of Representatives says that the 2019 general elections remained a victory for democracy and the Nigerian masses.
The Majority Leader of the House, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila (Lagos-APC) said this while briefing newsmen after a closed-door caucus meeting on Tuesday in the Abuja.
According to Gbajabiamila, the caucus believes that there is no victor, no vanquish, adding that victory belongs only to democracy and the Nigerian masses.
He congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari, the APC, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as well as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the roles they played in the recent elections.
Gbajabiamila also congratulated other stakeholders who he noted contributed immensely to the success of the general elections and for uplifting democracy in the country.
The majority leader said though were disappointment on both sides of the divide, with some lawmakers could not re-elected, leaders must bow to the supremacy of the will of the people
Ahead of the 2023 general elections, the majority leader urged Nigerians to strive for perfection in the electoral process.
Gbajabiamila said that the legislature remained committed to returning the Electoral Amendment Bill, to further perfect the electoral process.
He commended the Nigerians for keeping faith with democracy but urged INEC to speedily do the needful in areas elections were declared inconclusive
Gbajabiamila said that the 2019 general elections had come and gone, stressing that it was time to return to “the people’s business.“
The majority leader noted that the 2019 Appropriation Bill, a Bill Prohibiting Estimated Electricity Billing among other bills was still pending before the house.
He said that legislative initiatives that directly affected the people must be attended to, saying that people’s welfare remained the priority of the House.
Gbajabiamila condemned those who perpetuated violence in some areas and regretted the loss of lives and property in the just conducted general elections.
He prayed for the repose of the souls of all those who lost their lives during general elections, especially Rep. Olatoye Temitope (APC-Oyo), ”Sugar” who died of gunshot during the governorship election.
The majority leader said that the caucus did not believe that election should take the life of any Nigerian, adding that a life lost was one too many.
