The Anambra State House of Assembly on Tuesday held its last plenary for the 6th Assembly, while also announcing that its next assembly would be inaugurated Wednesday.
The last plenary session saw the dissolution of the 7th Assembly that was constituted in 2015.
The dissolution of the House followed a letter of proclamation from the State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, dissolving the House which was read by the Speaker, Barrister Mrs. Rita Maduagwu.
Addressing members during the sitting, the Speaker, Mrs Rita Maduagwu, thanked members for their hard work and commitment to the legislative business, which she said engendered a good working relationship with other arms of government in the state.
“I can proudly say that our legislation in the past four years have benefitted the good people of Anambra State through the cordial relationship between the Executive and the Legislatives.
“I must also commend the House for working hard to take Anambra State to the higher level.”
She said the sixth Assembly performed well with as much as over 90 people oriented bills for the good and development of the state.
Meanwhile, it was gathered that a lawmaker from Anambra North senatorial zone, Hon. Uche Okafor who represents Ayamelum state constituency has been tipped to replace Maduagwu as speaker of the house.
A source within the assembly, who refused to disclose his name, said Okafor has the backing of Governor Obiano, and will most certainly replace Maduagwu.
The source said, “They have been on the game for sometime now, and Anambra South senatorial zone was initially favoured to produce the speaker, before the table turned.
“Though the governor hails from the northern senatorial zone, his deputy from the central, and the speaker is supposed to be from south, but the governor plans to bring his successor from south. So for now, we will have the north dominating by having the governor and the speaker,” the source said.
