NDLEA seizes 6000kg of hard drugs, destroys 144 Indian hemp farm hectares in Ondo


The Ondo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has revealed that about 6703kg hard drugs have been seized in the state.

The command on Wednesday revealed that the 6703.71 hard drugs, which included psychotropic substances were seized within the space of six months.

Giving the breakdown of the seizure to include, Cannabis Saliva, 5784.61Kg; Psychotropic substances, 917.04; 2kg of ‘Skuchies’, as well as 42.1 grams of Cocaine, the state Commandant of the Agency, Haruna Gagara stated that within the period, 22 convictions were also secured.

Gagara, who stated this during the commemoration of the United Nations Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit trafficking with the theme: “Health for Justice, Justice for health,” he maintained that farms of Cannabis Sativa measuring 188 hectares have also been destroyed.

“61 suspects between the ages of 14-50 years are also referred for counseling from the supply reduction unit.

“Public enlightenment and awareness campaigns were carried out in 16 different locations within the state.

“Based on the statistics above, it is imperative that governments, communities, families, schools, NGOs and media should take necessary steps to counteract drug abuse and illicit trafficking in the state.

While lamenting the alarming number of youths involvement and usage of illicit drugs, Gagara noted that the menace posed a great danger for country

“The teeming number of Nigerian youths currently undergoing counseling and rehabilitation for drug abuse is quite alarming and devastating.

“The rising number of Nigerian youths suffering from one form of mental illness or the other due to substance abuse has continued to be on the increase.

“To provide justice for health, we need to promote humane conditions of imprisonment to ensure health for all and justice for all,” he said.
