Abia State Governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, has directed the State Ministry of Finance led by Dr Aham Uko (Commissioner), to commence payment of civil servants and verified pensioners from Friday, 27/03/2020 and conclude latest Monday 30/3/2020.
This was contained in a terse statement by the Commissioner for Information, Chief John Okiyi Kalu on Thursday morning.
According to the governor,”This compassionate directive is aimed at ensuring that workers and verified pensioners have money to stock up food in the event of a lockdown in the state”.
Meanwhile, Governor Ikpeazu has directed the conclusion of pension verifications on Friday, 27th March, 2020.
He mandated the Inter-ministerial Committee on Coronavirus to commence issuance of daily updates to citizens till further notice.
In another development, with the increased cases of COVID-19 pandemic rocking the country, the Speaker of Abia State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Chinedum Orji, has urged all Abians and visitors to the State to strictly follow the guidelines established by the State Government in the fight against the rampaging Coronavirus.
The Speaker said this on Wednesday in a statement made available to newsmen in Umuahia, the Abia State capital.
He emphasised that the Coronavirus scourge though a global reality which requires the cooperation of everyone to prevent, manage and control was not a death sentence.
His words, “The Coronavirus is a new reality worldwide but it can be defeated as long as citizens comply with directives from government and follow all the guidelines issued with regard to it. At the House of Assembly, we have followed up with the procedures put in place by the State Government and are satisfied with them. It is now for all Abians to ensure they play by the rules.
“No one should panic but everyone should do what is needed to prevent the virus from afflicting our state. By God’s grace and with everyone’s cooperation, we will defeat the virus”.
