Abubakar Malami, Nigeria’s Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, has declared that he did not personally recruit individuals or companies to collect government debts for him.
He stated that recovery agents engaged by his office were institutional and not his agents.
His spokesman, Umar Gwandu, said this in a statement on Friday, in reaction to the controversy trailing the process.
Gwandu explained that all those involved in the recovery of assets and generation of revenues belonged to the Federal Government of Nigeria, but engaged through the instrumentality of the Justice Ministry.
“Such engagements were purely based on the interest of the general public as a guiding principle,” he noted.
Gwandu reiterated Malami’s stance that the appointment of the agents was neither propelled by ulterior motive nor gratification.
The aide said it was part of “an unflinching patriotic commitment to get back to the country the revenue it deserves”.
He added that it was the same federal government “that engaged Trobell in the recovery of the unpaid revenue that asked the agency to step down based on the stakeholders meeting held”.
