Police arraign, teenagers, Secondary students for belonging to secret cults


The police, on Thursday, arraigned three Secondary School students; Aminu Rasak, 19, Chinedu Aduba, 14, and Eromosele Okonofuo, 21, before an Ogbeson Chief Magistrates’ Court in Benin for allegedly belonging to an unlawful group.
Saga Gist reports that the defendants are being tried on one count charge each for being members of a cult group.
Police prosecutor, Insp Abass Faruk alleged that the first defendant, Rasak, joined the Baby Bird secret cult (Eiye) sometime in March 2018 at Aduwawa Secondary School, in Benin.
According to the prosecutor, the second and third defendants (Aduba and Okonofua) were initiated into the Eiye cult in the same Aduwawa Secondary School on January 10, 2019, and August 2018 respectively.
He said the offence contravenes the provision of Section 64 of the Criminal Code Cap. 48 Vol. 11, Laws of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria 1976, now applicable in Edo. And if found guilty of being a member of an unlawful group, prescribes a three-year jail term if convicted.
The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge
The Chief Magistrate, Prince Mutairu Oare, admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N100,000 each, with one surety in like sum.
He said that the surety must be a guardian, adding that all information must be verified by the court’s Registrar.
The magistrate adjourned the case until June 2, for further hearing.
