British boxer, Anthony Joshua, has reacted to fellow compatriot, Dillian Whyte’s defeat against Russian fighter, Alexander Povetkin at Matchroom Fight Camp on Saturday night.
Saga Gist had reported that Whyte had floored Povetkin twice by the fourth round, but was knocked out by a massive uppercut in the fifth.
Whyte’s defeat has derailed his goal of challenging for Tyson Fury’s WBC heavyweight title.
Reacting, Joshua urged Whyte to take time and reflect before coming again.
He also congratulated Povetkin for his victory.
“This is just a blip in his career,” Joshua told Sky Sports. “Dillian fights for himself.
“People are going to talk now, and people are going to say all sorts of stuff about his performance and stuff.
“Dillian is a fighter, so I am sticking with him as a fighter to say dust yourself off, get back up and go again.
He added: “The fight was called maximum violence, so when [Whyte] had the chance to take him out, I wanted to see that maximum violence.
“That’s why, for me, when I smell blood, I go in there to take someone out.
“Sometimes we get caught in the exchange, but at the end of the day, leave it a round or two later as we have seen there and anything can happen.
“The tactics sometimes go out the window. You have got to remember that this’s a fight.
“It is a dangerous sport, it is a tough old sport, but we love it.
“Congratulations to Povetkin. Dillian, dust yourself off champ, come back again.
“Do not listen to what anyone else is saying, I know what this game is about, and you know what it is about.
“We are involved in it now, and let’s make the most of it while we’re here.”
