A chieftain of the New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP, Barr. Olusegun Bamgbose has warned President Muhammadu Buhari against extending the tenure of the retiring Inspector General of Police, IGP Mohammed Adamu.
Adamu, who completed his 35 years of service on Monday, is expected to vacate the office for someone else to carry on but the President has the prerogative to extend his stay if he so wishes.
But Bamgbose, a senior lawyer and 2023 presidential hopeful, noted that the recent sack of the service chiefs by the President was no doubt a welcome development, asking Buhari to in like manner dismiss Adamu.
In a chat on Monday, Bamgbose said that Mohammed Adamu should equally follow suit in the recent removal of security heads.
“There will be no justification whatsoever to extend the tenure of the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, when the service chiefs have been relieved of their duties.
“The Presidency should do the needful by refusing to extend IGP’s tenure. The Presidency should search for a new hand to handle the office.
“We have a lot of officers who are qualified to take over from him and even do better than him. This time around we will expect the President to choose a new officer presumably from the South.
“Buhari should be able at this time to tell Nigerians that he is President of Nigeria and not President of the North.
“Nigerians are watching to know whether Buhari will live up to the expectations of those who believe in equity. In this era of insecurity it will be ideal for Buhari to look towards the South in his choice of Inspector General of Police,” he said.
