Herdsmen killings: Nigerian students ask IGP to relocate to South West

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), South West has asked the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, to relocate to the region to stop the incessant attacks on the people by killer-herdsmen.

The call is coming on the heels of persistent killing and maiming by marauding Fulani herdsmen in communities within the southwestern states, particularly, Ogun, Ondo and Oyo.

In a statement, jointly signed by NANS Chairmen in Ogun, Ondo and Oyo, the IGP and other senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force as well as other security agencies were told to be more proactive in putting an end to the killing, kidnapping and raping of residents as well as other security challenges in the zone.

NANS said the attack on Yorubas and other residents of the zone had further reviewed the neglect of the southwest region by the federal government.

The student body asked President Mohammadu Buhari to declare a state of emergency on security, saying “The people of the South-West zone have never had it so bad in the history of the country.”

The statement reads: “In the last three weeks, no fewer than 15 persons have been killed while houses and farms have been burnt down in Oyo and Ogun States by criminal Fulani herdsmen.

“We call on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Muhammed Adamu and other senior officers of the police to relocate to the region to put an end to the attacks in the zone,” it said.

The statement was signed on Sunday by Akinteye Babatunde, Ondo NANS Chairman; Opakunle Mayowa, Oyo NANS Chairman and Kehinde Damilola Simeon, Ogun NANS Chairman.
