Residents of Oyo State are at the polls to elect local government chairmen and councilors today.
Saga Gist gathered that the State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) is conducting the election in all 33 local government areas in the state.
Our correspondent gathered that seventeen political parties are partaking in the election.
Saga Gist recalls that the last local government election was conducted in 2018 during the tenure of the immediate past Governor, late Senator Abiola Ajimobi.
OYSIEC Chairman, Isiaka Abiola Olagunju while speaking on the conduct of the election, said no electorate will be harassed, intimidated or embarrassed by any security operatives while performing their legitimate rights.
Olagunju who addressed journalists on Friday said, “I’m urging you all to go out and cast your votes for your preferred candidates without any fear of harassment, embarrassment or intimidation by any security operatives.
“We have visited all the necessary stakeholders and with the support we got from the security operatives who are on ground to monitor the whole exercises towards ensuring that it’s free, fair and credible.
“We are not in support of any political parties, we are going to make sure that each and every vote counts, we are to see that your vote counts; the votes of every citizen in Oyo State will surely count. We are going to provide very credible, free and fair elections.
The State Police command while speaking added that nine thousand Policemen have been deployed for today’s election.
Police in a statement on Saturday through its Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso appealed to residents to go about their activities without fear or favour.
The State Command of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) also said it has deployed two thousand eight hundred officers for the conduct of the election.
The officers have been deployed in strategic locations across the state.
