24-year-old man decapitates aunt, buries corpse in shallow grave

A 24-year-old man, Christian Eden Eyo, also known as Etteobong, has allegedly killed his 65-year-old aunt, Uduak Effiong Okpo, and buried her corpse in their family compound in Cross River State.

Saga Gist gathered that the suspect committed the act in the early hours of Wednesday at 37 Inyang Street by Afokang in Calabar South Local Government Area of the State.

Etteobong, from Ekpenetete in Akpabuyo Local Government Area of the State, was apprehended by vigilantes and handed over to the police after blood was traced to his room.

An eyewitness said the suspect and his aunt lived together in a family compound but in different apartments.

“Etteobong resides in a two-room apartment within the compound, whereas his aunt and her two children lived in another apartment within the compound.

“After removing her head, he buried her body in a shallow grave he had dug and prepared in front of the compound, while the head was buried inside his house where he had dug a pit of about 14 feet.

“Someone saw the woman’s freshly shaven head after she was murdered, together with bloodstains inside the room and outside the compound and reported to the vigilante”, a resident who spoke under anonymity told The Paradise.

Nkoyo, the victim’s child, said she did not know what happened until she stepped out of their apartment after she heard vigilantes making so much noise.

“When I heard that someone had been killed and buried in the compound then I came out. I saw Etteobong and asked him what had happened, and he said he had killed my mother.

“The police arrived at that point and began firing in the air, which forced me to run inside the house. During his altercation with the policemen, he used a machete to wound one of them.

“Normally, my mother goes outside to take her bath in the morning”, she said, adding that someone in a nearby building spotted the young man as he dug a shallow grave for her mother.

The deputy Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Igri Ewa, confirmed the incident. He said the matter is being investigated and the suspect would be charged to court to face justice.
