Congresses: Brace up for credible exercise - Enugu APC tells aspirants, members

The All Progressives Congress, (APC) in Enugu State has again re-assured that new executive members of the party would emerge from a credible process from the ward to the State level.

Chairman of the caretaker committee of the party in the State, Dr. Ben Nwoye, who gave the assurance, warned leaders of the party against conducting the forthcoming congresses in unauthorized places.

The Chairman spoke during a stakeholders’ meeting at the party’s Secretariat in Enugu.

A similar meeting was earlier held the penultimate week between ward, local government and State chairmanship aspirants and party members.

At the stakeholders’ meeting on Tuesday, Nwoye urged
those plotting to manipulate the lists at the various levels to retrace their steps as it would only incur the wrath of the party.

The outgoing Enugu APC boss assured all the contestants and the party faithful that the congresses will be transparent at all levels, stating that there will be no manipulation of elegible delegates’ lists.

He announced a directive that those who were suspended because they refused to withdraw their pending cases against the party remained disqualified to contest any position in congress.

“No juju house or religious houses should be used for congresses. No worship house, private or juju house should be used for congress.

“Anybody who was suspended because he or she refused to withdraw lawsuits against the party will not be allowed to contest,” he stated

He used the opportunity to restate that there is zoning in Enugu APC, recalling that it was because of zoning that senator Ayogu emerged as the flagbearer of the party in the 2019 Governorship election.

Also speaking, the leader of the APC in Enugu State, Senator Ayogu Eze called on the party faithful in the state to imbibe the spirit of love, unity and peace for the party to enjoy a smooth exercise that will guarantee its success in 2023 elections.

Eze stressed that the progress of the party depended on how successful it conducts the congresses.

According to him, members of the party must stop rumour-mongering and establish APC as a party capable of winning elections in the state.

“Let us stop the crisis until we get the governorship seat. If we’re united we will win elections and, there will be enough food on our table and appointments will come from within us here.

“Let us go back to our wards and harmonise our lists. We must go to Abuja (National Convention) as a united front. We must not let what happened in Abuja in 2018 (whereby Enugu did not participate) to happen this time”, Eze a former member representing Enugu North Senatorial District said.

While pledging to undertake the payment of forms for all councils without crisis, Eze said, “I’m ready to ensure that APC goes to this congress as a united front.

“I will pay for the forms of every LGA that harmonises without crisis. I assure you, there’s no ulterior motive behind this.

“My point is that unity is critical in our resolve for future victories in coming elections. We have had enough of the wranglings amongst us and it will only endanger our chances in future elections. We must close ranks now”.

Another leader of the party and director general, Voice of Nigeria (VON), Osita Okechukwu stated that APC is already united in Enugu but only needs to cement the unity.

Okechukwu, represented by Barr. Godwin Onwusigo, said “The people at the grassroots need to know who they elected. We must not give room for writing of lists because that will further exercerbate the balkanisation of the party.

“Let’s not give the courts the reason to cancel the Congress by conducting it in somebody’s house; it should be in a public place.”
