Hundreds of women from Okpara Inland and Orhoakpor communities in Ethiope-East Local Government Area of Delta State have staged a peaceful protest over the deadly activities of Fulani herdsmen and their cows on their farmlands and communities.
The women, who bore branches of leaves, chanted solidarity songs as they asked the Fulani herdsmen to vacate their lands, stressing that their activities are unbearable.
The women took their protests to the Isiokolo Police Station, Ethiope-East Local Government Council Secretariat, as well as the palace of the Ovie of Agbon Kingdom, HRM. (Engr.) Mike Omeru Ogurimerime Ukori I.
In a chat with newsmen, one of the women simply identified as Mrs. Patience U., noted that they had complained to some chiefs but they were not given listening ears.
According to her, the fulani herdsmen and their cows destroy their crops. She added that they even raped them (women) in their farms.
Mrs. Patience said they have been deprived of their farm businesses as a result of the deadly and abominable activities of the herdsmen.
While noting that farming is their only work and source of living, Mrs. Patience appealed to the traditional ruler, the council chairman to prevail on Governor Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa to come to their aid saying, “If not hunger will kill us with our husbands and children because we no longer go to farm.”
Mrs. Patience said the Fulani herdsmen should “leave our land completely. We don’t want them anymore “.
Chief Solomon Oturu who received the peaceful protesters at the palace promised to convey their messages to the Ovie of Agbon Kingdom as well as other relevant authorities.
