Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has lamented what it described as the “purchase” of police operatives by land grabbers.

For this reason, the human rights organisation called on the Inspector General of Police, IGP Usman Baba Alkali to insulate men of the police force from being used for such activities.

HURIWA was adding its voice to a recent SAVE OUR SOUL appeal sent to the IGP by the people of Ndiaga Amechi Awkunanaw, in Enugu South Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The community in the SOS, cried out over incessant harassment of the villagers by the officers of the SWAT, Force CID, Abuja, laying siege and hounding every member of the community.

In a press conference in Abuja at the weekend, the National Coordinator Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko and National Media Affairs Director Miss Zainab Yusuf, HURIWA specifically called on the IGP to call to order a Deputy Inspector General of Police, DIG, who is being accused of misdirection and misusing SWAT to try to allegedly assist the so called land grabber.

The community, in its petition, pointed out that this harassment and abuse of human rights have been the major challenge that is making everyone run from pillar to post in the community.

They also disclosed that the police had investigated this land matter and discovered all the alleged forgeries that led to the issuance of the C of O and the community wrote to Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, who acted swiftly by revoking the C of O.

“After the revocation, the siege never seized and the tiny portion where the Amachi people are developing had been the focal point the people has been constantly harassing, jailing, doing all sort of oppression,” the community said in part, according to HURIWA.

HURIWA, therefore, called on the IGP to investigate the allegation of gross human rights abuses by the office of the DIG in charge of FCID.

The human rights group noted that there was nowhere in the Nigeria Police Force (Establishment) Act, 2020, the police is empowered to subject citizens to torture and abuse of their rights but to provide services based on the principles of accountability and transparency, protection of human rights, among others.

The human rights group pointed out that “the laws are unambiguous on the obligations of the Nigerian Police Force to the citizenry.”
