Hausa, Yoruba clash: Ogun police confirms two dead, trucks destroyed

The Ogun State Police command said it has so far confirmed two deaths in the bloody clash between commercial motorcyclists working at Dangote Cement Factory junction in Ibese area of Ogun State.

Saga Gist reports that the clash, which started as a minor issue between bike riders and their union, later aggravated into an ethnic crisis between the Hausa and the Yoruba riding motorcycles in the area.

It was gathered that the transport union had increased the cost of tickets from N600 to N800, thereby generating issues when one Hausa rider refused to pay the new rate.

As of Tuesday, residents of the area lamented that about seven persons were killed in the incident.

But, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, on Wednesday night said in an interview that the police can confirm two casualties so far.

According to Oyeyemi, the State Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun, on Wednesday, led a team of security agents to Ibese for an on-the-spot assessment.

He reiterated that the situation had been brought under control by security agents deployed to the area.

“All security agents were there in Ibese today (Wednesday). The situation has been brought under control. There is no clash going on there any longer. So far, two persons have been confirmed dead,” Oyeyemi said on phone.

Contrary to rumour that the CP’s convoy was attacked on his way from Ibese, the PPRO said there was nothing like that.

Meanwhile, our correspondent reports that many Dangote trucks were set on fire by angry youths between Tuesday and Wednesday.

Also, shops and other properties along the axis were torched in the course of the melee.

An indigene of the area, who does not want his name in print, told our correspondent that the Olu Ode of Ibese was attacked on Wednesday.

“The Hausa attacked the Olu Ode of Ibese, Chief David Fadairo. They injured the bike rider and burnt his okada. The Olu Ode escaped because of some spiritual power,” he said.

The source explained that Fadairo had gone out to get necessary papers for the burial of one of the casualties of the incident when he was attacked alongside the man who carried him on bike.

Saga Gist observed that the Ogun State Government, on behalf of whom okada unions sell tickets, is yet to react to the incident as of Thursday morning.
