Associate of Resident Doctors (ARD) Imo State University Teaching Hospital, Orlu (IMSUTH) chapter have joined their counterparts nationwide to proceed on an indefinite strike following there failure of the state and federal governments to address issues regarding their welfare.

Speaking on Friday, the Imo State ARD President, Doctor Chima Edward confirmed, saying the federal government has failed to meet the agreement earlier reached before the suspension of the strike by the association a few months ago.

According to Dr. Chima,” the association is resuming suspended strike because doctors haven’t been paid since January this year. ”

He said the strike will push the government to come for a round table meeting with the association, to tackle the issue at hand.

He informed that the association in Imo State also set up a monitoring team to checkmate activities of doctors in the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Owerri, and the state teaching hospital during the ongoing strike, while noting that doctors haven’t been paid COVID-19 allowance in Imo State.

“We need to take care of ourselves first before attending to patients”, Doctor Chima averred.

However, some workers at the IMSUTH who spoke on condition of anonymity expressed worries about what the fate of the patients especially those on admission would be if the strike was not addressed as soon as possible.

One of the workers lamented, “I pray that this strike will be called off soon because a few months ago, Resident Doctors embarked on a strike. It affected the in-patients, who were already on admission.”
