One of the markets in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, has been shut down by the government to prevent an outbreak of cholera and other communicable diseases.

The government said the Iberekodo market in Abeokuta was shut for operating below public hygiene standards.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, Ola Oresanya, said the government’s decision was as a result of the dirty environment and the heaps of refuse within the market.

According to Oresanya, the market’s dirty environment would affect the safety of foodstuffs and other commodities sold there.

He declared that since the traders had failed to heed the government’s earlier warnings to comply with public hygiene protocols, it had no choice but to close the market.

“The state government will not fold its hands and watch a few traders compromise the health of millions of our people by trading in a dirty environment,” he stated.

The Special Adviser maintained that the market would remain shut until the traders clean the market environment of all dirt and clear the illegal dumpsite within the market, sending warning to other traders across the state.

“The state government would not allow trading in a dirty and unkempt environment, especially now that cholera and other communicable diseases are spreading across the country,” he added.

Responding, the Iyaloja of Iberekodo Market, Alhaja Monsurat Oladipupo, assured the government of the traders’ readiness to clean the market so that it could be opened for trading activities soon.
