Tuition Hike: IBBUL SUG disagrees with Niger govt over proposed review

The Student Union Government, SUG, of the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, IBBUL, Niger State, has insisted on the absolute reversal of the recently hiked tuition in the institution.

Muhammad Jibrin Lwafu, the SUG president of the school told the state government that he does not agree with its proposed downward review of the hike but expects a total reversal.

He insisted that the tuitions return to N27,500 for returning students of Niger State origin and N52,500 for new students.

The union in a press statement signed by Markus David Sakoma, the union’s Press Secretary in Minna said the government appeared to have lost touch with the current economic situation in the country.

The Niger State Government had appraised the upward review of fees for students of the university, Lapai proposed by the Governing Council, over the need to improve the schools standard of learning.

“The State Governor, Abubakar Sani Bello called on the Governing Council of the University to reconsider its position and review downward the tuition fees as follows: returning Students (indigene) from N67,925 to N50,000, new Students (indigene) from N129,675 to N95,000, non-indigenes Students (returning) from N117,325 to N100,000, new Students (non-indigene) from N201,210 to N170,000, new foreign Students from N329,625 to N250,000 while returning foreign Students would pay N200,000 instead of N266,760

But, the student union is asking the state government to reconsider its position, describing the proposed downward review by the state government as callous.

” The State Government appears to have lost touch with the current economic situation that has been ravaging not only the poor but the government itself,” the SUG IBBUL stated.

The union insisted that the union will stand to ensure that the reversal is total and absolute.

The statement then called on students of the institution not to pay anything to the school coffers, until further directives are issued by the Student’s apex body.
