The Zonal Commanding Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, ACM Benjamin Chidibere Nkwonta has flagged off a safety campaign for commercial drivers and motorists in Cross River State.

This year’s event has a theme: Maintain Safe Speed, Avoid Night Travel and Enjoy Quality Road Experience.

Nkwonta said the theme is apt and that the Corps hopes it would help reduce crashes and fatalities on Nigerian roads by 15 -20%.

He also added that speeding is responsible for 60% of all road crashes in the country in the last 10 years.

“The theme for this year is apt at this time because from data speeding is responsible for over 60%of crashes recorded in the last 10 years in Nigeria, hence it is discouraged.

“Also night travels are prevalent during this time and the negative results has been overwhelming.

“This campaign aims to reduce by 15-20% road traffic crashes and fatalities”, he said.

He emphasised that the country owes it a duty to protect its citizens against negative road crashes across the country.

Speaking, the sector commander of the FRSC in the state, Isaac Ameh said the campaign will complement other mechanisms aimed at stamping kit avoidable road crashes.

Governor Ben Ayade, represented by his Deputy, Professor Ivara Esu said road safety is a cardinal aspect of the nation’s security and development index.

He said his administration will do everything possible to safeguard it so as to reduce casualties on the roads.
