Bandits again abduct five people in Sokoto community, demand N500,000

Suspected bandits have abducted another five persons in Gatawa community, Sabon Birinn LGA of Sokoto State after collecting 11 million naira ransom for the 20 people earlier kidnapped in the state.

Sources said the bandits are demanding N500,000 naira ransom for the kidnap of the five persons.

“Wednesday’s attack was very surprising to the villagers even though the bandits did not kill anyone but embarked on kidnappings to get money”

“The bandits stormed the community in the early hours of Wednesday at about 8am when most people were waking up from their sleep. The bandits began to shoot bullets into the air to scare people and later started taking people hostage”

“As they kidnapped many people, they later released women and went away with the men demanding N500,000 as ransom” the source added.

The source added that the bandits had last month demanded N20 million naira from the villages including Gatawa community from where some persons were kidnapped.

He said Gatawa community contributed N11m of the N20m demanded.

“The source said the bandits have insisted that the people of Gatawa community between Thursday and Monday next week bring the ransom. For that reason every household has been levied N2,500, yet the money has not been completed”

However, all efforts to speak with the Sokoto State police spokesman, SP Sanusi Abubakar proved abortive as he refused to pick calls from newsmen after several attempts.
