NMPRA, Labour officials storm Yola petrol stations as fuel scarcity persists

Officials of Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Authority (NMDPRA) and labour union leaders stormed petrol stations around the Adamawa State capital Yola on Thursday to stop suspected hoarding of fuel.

Managers of the NMDPRA and state chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and his counterpart of the Trade Union Confess (TUC), visited fuel stations in the cosmopolitan LGAs of Yola North, Yola South and Girei where a couple of stations were found to have been involved in questionable dealings.

In particular, two stations were instantly queried by NMDPRA for not dispensing available fuel and for failure to account for fuel received.

Petrol has for a long while been scarce in Adamawa State, particularly around the cosmopolitan LGAs, as most stations apparently do not have fuel and the few which sell fuel are jammed with fuel-seeking residents.

At the end of the intensive inspection of dozens of filling stations within central Jimeta, along Jimeta-Yola Road, in Jambutu, along Yola-Numan Road and in Girei, the Adamawa/Taraba Controller of the NMDPRA, Sadiq Ibrahim, said he and his officials would continue to visit fuel stations in the next days and weeks as may be necessary to ensure that all who have fuel sell the stock to the public.

The Chairman of NLC in Adamawa State, Comrade Emmanuel Fashe, said it had become evident that the inspection exercise, which began Thursday morning and lasted into the evening, had already led to ease of queues around fuel stations.

“Sanctions have been applied and I believe it will restrain some people deliberately hoarding or misdirecting their supplies, so that our people could now begin to have the fuel they need,” the NLC chairman said.
