Former Manchester United striker, Teddy Sheringham, has named Mason Greenwood’s best position at the club following the arrival of interim manager, Ralf Rangnick.
Greenwood, who has been used as a right-winger in the past, has enjoyed an astonishing rise from Man United’s academy to the Red Devils’ first team in recent years.
The 20-year-old made his debut under former Manchester United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, in March 2019.
The England international has now established himself as a senior player at Man United.
But Sheringham believes Greenwood knows how to score goals and should play a centre-forward role for Rangnick’s side.
“I saw Denis Irwin in Dubai and I spoke to him about Greenwood,” Sheringham told the Manchester Evening News.
“I said I thought that’s where Greenwood was going to be heading [playing at centre-forward]. He said to me, ‘no, he’s more of a number 10’. Again, he’s scored his goals throughout his United career, youth career, but Denis thinks he’s more of a number 10.
“I thought he was developing as a number nine and you know, United were planning on keeping him there for the long run, learning off Cavani. Denis sees it a little bit differently and he sees Greenwood more often than I do.
“He [Greenwood] definitely knows where the goal is. I love the way he finishes, very, very clever. Whether he gets in the six-yard box enough for a centre-forward, I don’t know. He scores good goals rather than a lot of goals more often than not, I think.
“If he’s going to learn, if he’s going to be a number nine, then he needs to get in the six-yard box a little bit more often.”
