The leadership of the House of Representatives is to meet with the Committee on Banking and Currency to determine why some agencies, including the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) and the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company have failed to appear before lawmakers to defend their 2022 budget proposals.

The decision was made at plenary on Wednesday, sequel to the ruling of the Deputy Speaker, Idris Wase on a motion of personal explanation moved by Rep. Fatau Mohammed (Katsina).

Mohammed in the motion said the agencies have not defended their 2022 budget proposals before the Banking and Currency Committee constituted by Order 20, Rule 18, subsection 1 and 2 of the House which empowered it to oversight and evaluate their annual budget.

“It will interest the house to know that none of the above agencies has been over sighted in the past two years and they have failed to make their 2022 budget available to the committee. How long shall we allow this illegality to continue,” the lawmaker said.

Speaking in support of the motion, Deputy Minority Leader, Toby Okechukwu (PDP, Enugu) said the action of the agencies was a breach of the law as every government agency is required to appear before the House of Representatives for Appropriation.

”This is a breach of law of which this House should make a finding and place it properly the culpability of these agencies. It would be proper for this to come in a way of a motion for an investigation,’’ he said.

Wase said the leadership would engage the Committee to resolve the matter so that the panel can exercise its functions, stating that even as a Presiding Officer, he was hearing the matter for the first time which was not supposed to be so.
