The Director-General of the Progressives Governors’ Forum, Dr Salihu Lukman on Tuesday faulted the 2020 Corruption perception Index (CPI) released by Transparency International, saying it is part of a campaign for 2023.

Lukman made the assertions in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja, adding that the report painted a picture that suggests that the current All Progressives Congress (APC) administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has lost the fight against corruption.

Noting that such a report should be of concerns to well-meaning Nigerians, Lukman said what the report is trying to say is that to fight corruption based on the perception of Nigerian businesses and country experts, there must be a change of government.

“It is basically more of a political campaign for 2023. Nigerians, including local leaders of civil society groups and their international partners, are free to make their political choices and decisions.

“But they should be transparent about it. It must not be a case of shadowboxing Nigerian citizens and forcing them to kowtow to political choices fraudulently contrived because Nigerian citizens are committed to the fight against corruption.”

It would be recalled that Transparency International had last released its 2020 CPI, in which Nigeria ranked 149 out of 180 countries surveyed.

The country also came out as the second most corrupt country in the West African all-region coming just before Guinea-Bissau and the 13th most corrupt on the African continent, according to Transparency International.
