The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State has cried out over an alleged plot by Governor Dapo Abiodun and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to unleash terror on opposition parties during the July 24 local government election.

The PDP alleged that Gov Abiodun was in talks with some security agencies on how to molest and intimidate its members during the polls.

At a press conference addressed by the Chairman, Ogun PDP Local Government Election Organising Committee, Hon. Samson Bamgbose, at the party Secretariat in Abeokuta, Friday, the party said there were plans by the ruling party to chase away its members from collation centres across the State.

This, Bamgbose said, would create an avenue for the APC to manipulate figures with the support of the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC).

“The information going around is that the ruling government, under His Excellency, Prince Dapo Abiodun is already in talks with some security agencies on how to intimidate and molest PDP members and supporters including other oppositions.

“The plan is to unleash terror on our members and supporters and chase oppositions away from the collation centres in all the 20 LGAs. This, they reason, would allow OGSIEC, in partnership with APC, the freedoms to conjure fictitious votes for all APC candidates and announce the same in an atmosphere that would be heavily militarized.

“We feel having to further inform you of widespread news that the APC government is prepared to unleash terror on members of the opposition, all because they are hellbent on dishing out elective posts to their party men. On this, we appeal to you all press men and citizens of Ogun State as co-partners and stakeholders in the Ogun State democratic struggle, to join us in appealing to all our security agencies to responsibly demonstrate a high sense of professionalism,” he said.

The election committee chairman urged OGSIEC to conduct the election in strict compliance with the laws, saying results should first be made public at the polling units and then collated and announced at the ward collation centres for councillorship, and local government collation centres for chairmanship.

Bamgbose warned that the result “must not be taken out to somewhere else. We won’t take that! Anything outside this shall be strongly resisted.”

The PDP reminded the governor of the ‘excruciating memories’ of the EndSARS protest, adding that the scars were still visible to discern.

“We hope the (EndSARS protest) will not be reignited by any needless and mindless plot to allocate figures by OGSIEC in partnership with the ruling government in the forthcoming LG election. This will be too terrible a way to go,” the PDP warned.

Meanwhile, the opposition party said its primary elections are scheduled to be held on May 25 and 27 for councillorship and chairmanship aspirants respectively.

“There is no gainsaying the fact that the good people of Ogun State are already completely devastated and tensed by the serial failures of the ruling APC government in critical sectors of the economy, security and welfare.

“We are determined to rescue the Ogun State people from the shackles of the agony, insensitivity and gross maladministration of the ruling APC government.

“We appeal to members of the public to come out in large numbers to team up with PDP to vote for all our candidates in the forthcoming LG election on July 24, 2021,” the PDP pleaded.

However, reacting, the Publicity Secretary of the caretaker committee of the APC in Ogun, Tunde Oladunjoye, described the allegation as baseless, saying “there is nothing of such at all, it is totally untrue.”

Oladunjoye described PDP as “a coward that died many times before his death. PDP should not resort to scaremongering, what is very important is the image of Ogun state, we should not demarket Ogun state.

“It is a baseless allegation and it is not in tandem with what this present regime is known for. Since Abiodun became the governor, the heat in the polity before the election has been totally removed, if not totally alienated”.
