The Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly and Representative of Umuahia Central Constituency, Rt. Hon Chinedum Orji, has berated the poor operations of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) in the state.

The Speaker lamented that the people of the state are made to pay very high tariffs for power not supplied, frowning at a situation where power equipment like transformers get faulty and it takes months or years to repair or replace such equipment thereby leaving the people in darkness.

Hon Orji, who made his feelings known while presenting a matter of urgent public importance which he sponsored during the house plenary session, on Wednesday, expressed worries at a situation where he had personally provided several transformers to communities in his constituency but they were still charged huge sums for installation.

“My Distinguished Colleagues, beyond the atrocious activities earlier mentioned, you may wish to note that the already encumbered consumers are expected to contribute to repair or replace broken and faulty EEDC equipment and are left to grope in darkness for not effecting the repairs,” he said.

“It is my considered opinion that urgent steps be taken to address this ugly situation in order to discontinue the relocation of small and medium scale enterprise clusters in our dear State to our sister states”.

Orji further decried the erratic power supply, obnoxious estimated billing, delay in repair/replacement of faulty power equipment and non-distribution of prepaid metres to electricity consumers as directed by the Federal Government.

He submitted that the management of EEDC should commence the distribution of free prepaid metres to consumers in the State as directed by the Federal Government.

He also called for the urgent consideration and passage of the Abia State Electric Power Authority and Power Stations bill, urging the State government to look into alternative power supply for the State.

Meanwhile, a bill for a Law to provide for the appointment of the State Auditor General and the State Auditor-General for Local Governments has passed first reading on the floor of the Abia House of Assembly.

The bill was sponsored by the Majority leader and the Member representing Obingwa East constituency, Hon Solomon Akpulonu.

The Abia House of Assembly has however adjourned its legislative activities to Monday, 28th June, 2021.
