Ex-Tottenham, Chelsea striker Jimmy Greaves is dead, Rio Ferdinand, Shearer, Wright react


A former Tottenham and Chelsea striker, Jimmy Greaves is dead.

Greaves passed away on Sunday morning at the age of 81, at his home.

Tottenham announced the sad news with a statement that read: “We are extremely saddened to learn of the passing of the great Jimmy Greaves.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to Jimmy’s family and friends at this sad time.

“Rest in peace, Jimmy.”

Reacting, some former Premier League stars, Rio Ferdinand, Alan Shearer, and Ian Wright, took to their Twitter accounts to pay tribute to Greaves, who is Tottenham’s leading goal-scorer of all-time and is widely regarded as one of the best striker’s football has ever seen.

Wright wrote: “The first footballer’s name I ever heard from my teacher. ‘No Ian! Finish like Jimmy Greaves!’ “May he rest in peace.”

On his part, Ferdinand tweeted: “Big loss to the footballing world.. sending my condolences to the Greaves family. First autobiography I ever read! Inspiration.”

Similarly, Shearer wrote: “RIP Legend. Goals, Goals, Goals. A remarkable goal scorer.”
