The Ogun State House of Assembly is legislating on a bill that would ensure that all residents of the state are registered by the government.

The bill, when passed into law, would consider resident’s permit for short-term residents like National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and students of higher learning institutions.

The bill entitled “H.B. No. 062/OG/2021 – The Ogun State Residents Registration Agency and the Registration of Ogun State Residents Law 2021” was on Wednesday deliberated on by stakeholders, at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

It was learnt that there would be an Ogun State Resident Registration Agency, which would be saddled with the responsibility of capturing the database of people living in Ogun.

Speaking on the bill, the Speaker, Olakunle Oluomo, emphasized the importance of proper planning and accurate database.

Oluomo noted that the high rate of insecurity bedeviling the country was as a result of lack of proper means of identification for the residents, saying this needed to be addressed.

The Speaker maintained that “the Assembly is determined to ensure the speedy passage of the bill in collaboration with the executive arm of government.“

This, he said, would be geared towards ensuring adequate planning for the teeming populace.

He requested for “a temporary resident’s permit to allow for data capturing of short-term residents, especially corps members and students of higher institutions.”

In their separate remarks, the State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, TPL Tunji Odunlami, the Director of Community Development in the State Ministry of Community Development and Cooperatives, Mudasiru Oriola and other stakeholders lauded the government for the bill.

They harped on the need to start using data gathered for developmental purposes, adding that Community Development Associations should be saddled with the responsibility of verifying and presenting community residents for registration.
