Residents of the Koju Foam community of Osogbo, Osun State, are still lamenting the life-threatening situation resulting from the poor job carried out on the drainage connecting the community to the Osogbo-Ikirun road.

Members of the community, through Urban Alert, a social welfare non-profit organisation, had requested the Osun State Ministry of Works and Transport and Ministry of Environment to come to their aid and direct the contractor to rehabilitate the drainage.

They alleged that the contractor, in executing the contract for the Osogbo-Ikirun road, did not properly construct the drainage diverting water into their community from the road.

As a result of the work, the drainage cannot hold the volume of water passing through it, and therefore, it has burst.

A community leader, Samson Owolabi, stated that they had written to both government parastatals with a promise of action but that was before the rains.

He added that now that the rains have become heavier even with the forecast of heavier downpours and floods by NiMET, the condition of the drainage had gone from bad to worse.

The community leader revealed that their situation became public knowledge when they contacted Urban Alert which later took up their cause.

“They wrote the state government through the Ministries of Works and Transport and also of Environment.

“Truth is that Officials of both ministries came to inspect and to assess the situation with a promise to get the job done on it.”

Owolabi urged the state government to prevail on the contractor to come to their aid before things went out of hand.

Meanwhile, Oluwatobi Ayodele, Associate Programme Officer for the organisation said on the phone that the ministries concerned have written back to the community and their organisation about the worsening situation of the Koju Foam community drainage.

According to him, “We acknowledge the receipt of the response to the letter sent to the Osun State Ministry of Works concerning the life-threatening situation at Koju Foam Community, Osogbo.

“While we attest that the Ministry had paid multiple visits to the community, it is essential to note that none of the visits has translated into any meaningful step.”

Ayodele revealed that they observed that the collapsed drainage proved the works ministry, who had claimed that the work was not below standard, wrong.

He explained that as a result of the collapsed drainage, the access road in the community has remained inaccessible by residents.

He stated that the Ministry of Works had hinted that to solve the situation of the badly constructed drainage, the contractor would have to construct the road leading into the community all over.

While disclosing that the state government is claiming that there is no fund to start another project in the state, Urban Alert explained that there have been media reports that the state had received a refund on the Osogbo-Ikirun-Kware boundary road whose construction has led to the problem now confronting Koju Foam community.
