The management of the Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, has debunked reports that its Daily Part-Time students protest led to the suspension of the first-semester examination.

In a telephone chat, its Public Relations Officer, Tope Abiola, revealed that there were no student protests but what happened was that students were entreating the school management to give them more time to offset their school fees.

Abiola stated that the school management had demanded that the National Diploma (ND) Daily Part-Time students pay their school fees before they would start writing their examination, adding that they were in their 16th week of the first semester.

The PRO explained that many of the students could not pay the fees despite collecting the money from their parents.

According to him, “The normal thing is for students to pay their school fees and complete their registration before the commencement of the examination.

“The students forcefully wanted to write the examination but later pleaded for grace which the school acceded to and gave them a two weeks period for them to pay up.

“On the expiry of the two weeks, the first-semester examination for the DPT students commended in earnest but many of them could still not afford to pay the school fees. Without the school fees, they can’t be offered identity cards which will act as a means of blocking impersonation and examination malpractice.

“The students all gathered again to plead with the school management to give them more time so as to finish paying the school fees.

“That is what really happened. The school after threatening to stop students that have not paid their school fees from writing the examination had to give room for grace and in that wise, had to suspend the examination for another four days.

“There was no protest as reported but rather students appealing to management to give them more time to enable them completely pay off their school fees or to write their examination without payment.”

The school’s spokesperson also disclosed to this medium that the examination had been suspended in order to enable the students to pay their school fees.

He stressed that without payment, there would be no registration, issuance of identity cards and examinationfor such students.

Initial reports had indicated that DPT students of the school had protested the management’s directive to stop examination for school fees defaulters.

A development that made the students protest leading to a Higher National Diploma (HND) Mass Communication student sustaining serious injuries.

The PRO however said the student sustained the injuries during a rush by her and fellow students to gain entry into the examination halls during clearance.

The school had through an announcement signed by its Registrar, Olayide Lawal disclosed that, “This is to inform ND II students that the ongoing 1st-semester examination for 2020/2021 academic session is hereby suspended till further notice.

“I am also to inform you that a new date for the examination would be announced in due course.”
