Youths in Plateau State have been tasked to actively participate in politics to bring about change and transformation needed in the country.
The youths were also urged to take over leadership from the old folks piloting the affairs of the nation over the years and not resort to complaints about the deteriorating economy.
This call was made at the Maitama Sule Leadership Lecture Series held at ASUU Secretariat, University of Jos, organized for the student wing of Coalition of Northern Groups Plateau State Chapter.
At the event, Dr Reuel Dakum of the Department of Business Administration, University of Jos, said the essence of the lecture series is to encourage youths to join politics and be part of the leadership drive in the country.
He said, “With the way the system of leadership is deteriorating in this country, the youths should not sit down and continue to blame old leaders, but rather should be blaming themselves for not actively participating in politics.
“In other countries, like Finland, for example, the Prime Minister is 21 years old and you can see how she is thriving. The same thing can apply here in Nigeria because young people have the capacity to lead.
“We are endowed with the intellectual capacity to rule. For instance, whenever our youths travel out, they excel in other countries.
“That means the youths can lead in this country. So, this is what we are here to teach our youths and I believe that they have really embraced this particular idea,” he maintained.
Also speaking, Jamilu Aliyu of the National Board of Students for Northern Coalition Group, said they have decided to take the bull by its horn and ensure that they restore the past glory of the country.
He said, “There is a popular slogan, that ‘youths are the leaders of tomorrow but when is that tomorrow going to be? This is the question.
“We decided to organize these lectures to mentor students on good leadership and to also make them know the essence of leadership.
“This is Imperative so that the students who are in their youthful ages can engage themselves in politics since it is the foremost channel to holding political office in the country,” he said.
Aliyu lamented the happenings in the tertiary institutions and the student community, where students and lecturers are abducted by kidnappers at will, saying that the authorities should as a matter of urgency do something about it to sustain and develop the education sector.
He equally decried the dilapidated structures in schools, increase in tuition fees and other policies making life unbearable for students, stressing that they won’t fold their hands and allow such to continue.
