The Osun State Government has revealed that a total of 198,541 and 90,076 persons have been vaccinated for the first and second doses of AstraZeneca vaccines in the State.

The State government also revealed that a greater part of the 5 million population, 50 percent of which is in the 18 years bracket, were yet to be vaccinated.

Governor Adegboyega Oyetola made this known Friday during the flag-off ceremony for the COVID-19 mass vaccination campaign in Osogbo.

Represented by his deputy, Benedict Alabi, Governor Oyetola recalled that the state took delivery of the first set of 64, 240 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines on March 9, 2021.

He disclosed that the first set of persons to be vaccinated were the health workers at the isolation centres, the deputy governor and himself, adding that it set the pace for the vaccination of health personnel and other frontline workers in the State.

“We took delivery of 47,900 doses of Moderna vaccine and had the flag-off ceremony on the 4th of August, 2021.

“In my speech on that occasion, I did promise that the Federal Government and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) were making efforts to get the vaccine for the rest of the populace.

“I am happy to announce that about 2 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been allocated to the state and all the eligible persons that are yet to be vaccinated now have access to the vaccine,” he said.

While enjoining eligible citizens of the State who are either partially vaccinated or yet to be vaccinated to take the advantage of the opportunity to get the vaccine, the governor explained that fixed posts at primary, secondary and tertiary health facilities and outreach posts like churches, mosques and others will be used for the exercise.

In his welcome address, the Chairman of the Osun State Primary Health Care Board, Oyeleke Ogunsola also revealed that Osun state is amongst the eight states given sufficient vaccine for COVID-19 and also found worthy to be given extra vaccines by the Federal Government to vaccinate the entire adult population

Ogunsola who revealed that Osun State has been involved in the vaccination against COVID-19 since March 10, 2021, added that the performance of the administration in all sectors had been nothing short of astronomical in the area of health, with much focus on the healthcare delivery at the grassroot.

He maintained that the COVID-19 vaccine which has been tested and found to be trusted was safe and efficacious in protecting against the deadly pandemic.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) representative in Osun, Dr Bello Ahmed who revealed that the world body has donated N36 million for the campaign, added that the support was in view of the state’s commitment toward provision of quality and functional healthcare delivery across the nooks and crannies of the State.
