Residents, especially fun seekers and owners of entertainment outfits like open joints, hotels and eateries in Owerri, the Imo State capital, have lamented how insecurity is drastically killing nightlife in the State

Some residents of Owerri, who spoke said that the fallout of the unrest in Owerri had sent majority of sex-workers they referred to as ‘runs girls’ out of the streets and into forced hibernation, while many event centres are closing shops due to poor patronage and people are losing jobs in droves.

Emeka Okechukwu, a senior staff of the popular Rockview Hotel, Owerri said the hotel has stopped serving buffet because its patronage had thinned down.

He said: “The insecurity has adversely affected us because of lack of guests and as it is now, the hotel and many big hotels in Owerri no longer prepare buffet because the guests are not there. Before this security problem, we used to have the whole place fully booked to the extent that we would be recommending other hotels for customers.”

Okechukwu said brothels and nightclubs around World Bank road, Control Post and Concord axis were counting losses already, as patronage had reduced due to the near absence of fun-seekers and sex-hawkers.

Some of the women of easy virtue said that those of them who usually collected high prices had drastically reduced their costs.

Douglas Princemola, a regular guest at the Concord Hotel Owerri, told our correspondent that he no longer enjoys life in Owerri since the unknown gunmen attacks began in some areas.

Princemola said that he had reduced nightlife activities because of the current security challenge in the State.

Oliver Joseph, a journalist said that Owerri city was generally boring and that fun-seekers no longer stay around during the weekends.

“You can hardly find friends to relax within this town; they always want to go home as early as 6 p.m,” he said.

Meanwhile, the General Manager of Concord Hotel, a state-owned facility, Eziada Ngozi Nwaizu commended the Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma’s efforts to ensure that peace gradually returns to communities in every part of the State.

She said, “I thank our Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma for bringing back peace in Imo State. As the manager of a five-star hotel, I wish to let everyone know that nightlife has returned to our beloved state. I give kudos to our governor, a man who knows his onions”.
