EPL: I always pay respect – Dimitar Berbatov names his two football idols

Former Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United striker, Dimitar Berbatov, has named his two football idols.

Berbatov chose AC Milan legend Marco Van Basten and Newcastle United Alan Shearer as his two football idols, adding that he always pays respect to them.

The Bulgarian had an incredible career that saw him play for Man United, Tottenham and Bayer Leverkusen.

Berbatov netted 251 goals in 615 career appearances before retiring in 2019.

Asked by Manchester United’s official website why he never celebrated his goals wildly, Berbatov replied: “To be honest, this was me. This was me; this was who I was. I didn’t celebrate much like some people are doing now. I always tried to show my respect, first and foremost, to the guy who gave me the assist. Going first to them, to say ‘thank you’, as we played in the same team.

He added: “And then raising my hand because my idols were Marco van Basten and Alan Shearer. When I scored a goal, I was raising my hands to try to pay respect in the way I was doing that when scoring goals.”
