Head of Service in Cross River State, Timothy Ogbang Akwaji has alleged that the names of several ghost workers have been criminally inserted into the state payroll.
He disclosed that the state has set machinery in motion aimed at cleaning up the payroll.
Speaking at a meeting with principal officers, heads of ministries, departments and agencies, the Head of Service said the action has become imperative following plummeting financial inflows from both the federation account and internally generated revenue sources.
Akwaji said irregularities, leakages and criminal insertions in the payroll have created an additional financial burden on the state.
This, he disclosed was making it increasingly difficult for the government to meet the financial obligations of its workforce as and when due.
He charged the administrative heads to treat the audit exercise as crucial, inferring that the exercise would not take the habitual configuration where days are set aside for MDAs screening.
He said such a method has given room for the insertion of more ghost workers into the system.
“The outcome of the audit exercise would not only be used to stabilize the state’s financial position, rid of ghost workers but would be used to authenticate every promotion before implementation amongst other civil service administrative matters.
“I assure workers of government’s commitment to improved welfare through payment of salaries, gratuities and pensions, promotions and implementation, the appointment of permanent Secretaries, training and workshops but compliance with the civil service rules is paramount.”
