‘No new bank robbery in Ekiti’ – Police counter fake news

The Ekiti State Police Command has described as false a social media report of an alleged bank robbery in Ado-Ekiti and Ikere-Ekiti on Tuesday.

The robbery attack was debunked by the command through a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abutu Sunday.

Debunking the news, DSP Abutu Sunday noted that the news was concocted by fake news peddlers, whom he described as enemies of the state.

The statement reads in part: “The attention of the Ekiti State Police Command has been drawn to a fabricated story circulating across the state, especially through social media, that a bank was under attack by a group of armed robbers today, December 19, 2023.

“The Command wishes to state clearly that the trending news was just a mere imagination of some fake news peddlers and enemies of the state who derive joy in causing unnecessary apprehension in society.”

DSP Sunday, who implored the public to disregard the robbery reports, revealed that the state’s Commissioner of Police, Ogundare Dare, has ordered the deployment of tactical and intelligence teams across the state, including in the vicinity of banks, to forestall any attacks
