The Provost, Federal College of Forestry, Ibadan, Dr. Ibraheem Oduola Lawal, has declared that the institution is producing independent graduates with practical approaches and knowledge on how things are done. He further stated that the college’s curriculum is designed to equip students with hands-on experience and real-world skills, preparing them to address contemporary challenges in forestry and environmental management in society.
Lawal while speaking in Ibadan, the state capital at a live radio programme on Fresh FM, Ibadan, tagged, “Situation Room” on Wednesday noted that “Federal College of Forestry is the training arm of Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria, with seven colleges spread across geo-political zones of the country.”
He further noted that the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria focuses on applying scientific knowledge and techniques to manage and conserve forest resources in a manner that meets the needs of both current and future generations, adding that the institute’s research covers topics such as sustainable forest management practices, biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and the socio-economic benefits of forests in Nigeria.
Lawal said, “The college of forestry, Ibadan offers OND, HND, and part-time programs in courses such as Forestry, Environment, and Technology, Agricultural Technology, Horticulture and Landscaping, Statistics, Crop Production Technology, Agricultural Extension and Management, Agribusiness Management, Basic Science and General Studies, Computer Science, Vocational Studies, and Wood and Paper Technology. The management has also approved two new courses: Applied Bioscience and Indigenous Knowledge Systems. These courses are eligible for the National Youth Service. Most of our students are currently serving in various locations across the nation.”
When asked about the contribution of various forestry and agricultural agencies, and why graduates often end up working in banks or other professions, Dr. Lawal responded, "At the College of Forestry, we are producing independent graduates with practical approaches and knowledge on how things are done. However, the orientation of students is often poor. You need to be passionate about what you are doing in order to succeed. Passion is essential. It drives innovation, commitment, and the ability to tackle challenges.
“During my time as a student at the Federal College of Forestry, my cohort was responsible for establishing the Sakponba Plantation in Edo State. That hands-on experience helped me establish my own farm while I was still a student at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB). My knowledge and experience also enabled me to set up an herbal garden at FRIN while serving as Director of the Bio-Medicinal Research Centre (BMRC). The College of Forestry, Ibadan, is a technology-based institution with a strong focus on practical learning. As a student, you will be exposed to various forestry practices.”
The Provost also noted that the college will be celebrating its 85th Anniversary and Graduation on October 24, 2024. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo will serve as the chairman, while Senator Sharafadeen Alli, the Senator representing Oyo South Senatorial District, and his Oyo Central counterpart, who serves as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment, will be the special guests of honour at the event.
