Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has decried the projection that 141 million Nigerians are expected to live below poverty line.
In a post on his verified X handle on Thursday, Sani said it is ironic that the report comes at a time when the States and Local Governments are receiving more money than any other time in the history of Nigeria.
Saga Gist reports that the Nigeria Economic Outlook 2026 report, titled “Turning Macroeconomic Stability into Sustainable Growth,” reinforced the grim projections.
It is estimated that by 2026, an overwhelming 141 million people; 62% of the population will be living in poverty.
Reacting, the former lawmaker said, “The report by the PricewaterhouseCoopers, PwC, that about 141 million Nigerians are expected to live below the poverty line is alarming. That is more than half the population of this country.
“It’s ironic that this report comes at a time when the States and LGs are receiving more money than any other time in the history of this country. This is a time bomb that must be addressed to prevent a national social uprising.”
