The former Minister of State for Defence and a Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Musiliu Olatunde Obanikoro has described the statement credited to a Labour Party group as baseless, unfounded and laughable.
Reacting to some online reports on an allegation that the former Ambassador is attempting to remove the names of Labour Party Candidates for the House of Representatives in Lagos State from the INEC portal, Obanikoro expressed shock and dismay at how some people could concoct such an impossible lie, especially when elections into the House of Representatives have been concluded.
In a statement signed by Obanikoro’s Special Assistant, Sulaimon Adebiyi, Obanikoro stated that, ‘despite results of last Saturday’s elections in Lagos State and the eventual emergence of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as our President-elect, our party (the APC) has become more resolute and determined to convince the good people of Lagos State, that our governorship candidate, Babajide Sanwo-Olu and all our House of Assembly candidates deserve their votes. We are further resolved to bring the dividends of democracy to the doorsteps of our people, thereby promising to continue the good works Governor Sanwo-Olu has started”.
The former Ambassador to the Republic of Ghana stated further that ‘the law is very clear as to the next step to be taken by anyone and party who feel aggrieved as a result of the election. We are not a party to cry foul nor act undemocratically, the tribunals and higher courts are there to seek redress and as a true democrat, I’ll not be involved in any act to subvert the wishes of our people. It is strange and amusing however, that anyone could even contemplate or consider the possibility of removing names of candidates who legitimately contested and won elections. Indeed, the only authorities who can do that are the courts of the land through their judgements.
Senator Obanikoro therefore called on the group and everyone to channel their energies at joining our President-elect in building a better nation, as expressly contained in his acceptance speech and stop hitting the polity with unsubstantiated, false, inciting and reckless allegations and statements. He challenged anyone with any evidence of such an allegation to approach appropriate authorities.
The statement concluded that, allegations of this nature are targeted at further threatening and weakening the perceived fragile peace in the land as a result of last Saturday’s elections, which must not be encouraged.
