Transfer: Man City identify player to sign as Declan Rice’s alternative

Manchester City are considering a big-money transfer move for Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong after leaving the race to sign Declan Rice from West Ham United, according to The Sun on Sunday.

Man City made a £90million offer for Rice but walked away from negotiations after Arsenal upped their bid to £100m plus £5millin in add-ons.

The reigning Premier League and UEFA Champions League holders are looking to reinforce their midfield following midfielder Ilkay Gundogan’s decision to leave Etihad at the end of his contract this summer for Barcelona.

As a result, Pep Guardiola’s side are keen to bring De Jong to Manchester United this summer.

De Jong was expected to leave Barcelona last summer for Manchester United, but the Netherlands international opted to remain at the Camp Nou.
