Celebrating a Distinguished Leader, Mentor, and Pioneer in Medical Education
On the Occasion of the Maiden Convocation of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare, Bauchi State
Some men occupy positions, but a few occupy a special place in the hearts of those privileged to work with them. Some lead institutions, while others inspire people, shape destinies, and leave footprints that generations will continue to follow. Professor Bala Mohammed Audu belongs to the latter category.
As we look forward to October 16, when the Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare, Bauchi State, will celebrate its maiden convocation, I am filled with profound admiration, gratitude, and pride in celebrating a man whose leadership journey I have had the privilege of witnessing at close quarters.
Professor Audu is not merely a distinguished academic, accomplished medical professional, or institutional leader. His journey reflects the power of vision, discipline, service, and purposeful leadership.
As President of the Nigerian Medical Association from 2024 to 2026, he served the medical profession during a critical period, representing thousands of Nigerian doctors and contributing to conversations about the future of healthcare in our country. His tenure demonstrated that leadership is not simply about occupying an office but about accepting responsibility and working for the greater good.
My relationship with Professor Audu, however, goes beyond his titles and public accomplishments.
I had the honour of serving as his First Vice-President during his presidency of the Nigerian Medical Association. That experience gave me a deeper appreciation of the demands of leadership, the weight of decision-making, and the patience required to navigate professional responsibilities.
Serving alongside him strengthened my understanding of teamwork, institutional responsibility, and the importance of placing the profession's interests above personal considerations.
Every leadership journey presents difficult decisions, competing expectations, and challenges that test character. It is during such moments that leadership becomes a true measure of temperament, conviction, and commitment. I remain grateful for the opportunity to have shared that journey with him.
As October 16 approaches, I see the university's maiden convocation as another remarkable milestone in Professor Audu's life of service to medicine and education.
To serve as the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of a university is to accept a responsibility extending beyond the present. It involves laying foundations, establishing traditions, building systems, inspiring students, and creating an institution that will outlive its founding leadership.
A maiden convocation is more than an academic ceremony. It represents the fulfilment of an institutional vision and the beginning of a legacy that future generations will inherit.
For a university dedicated to health sciences, this responsibility carries even greater significance. Nigeria urgently needs institutions capable of producing competent, compassionate, innovative, and ethically grounded healthcare professionals.
I sincerely hope that the Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare, will grow into a centre of excellence in medical education, scientific research, healthcare innovation, and workforce development.
Professor Audu, as we anticipate this historic occasion, I celebrate your accomplishments with deep personal fulfilment. I cherish the privilege of having served alongside you and witnessing another important chapter in your contribution to Nigeria's medical profession and education sector.
May this maiden convocation mark the beginning of greater accomplishments. May the university flourish under your pioneering leadership, and may its graduates become worthy ambassadors of its vision.
Your journey from leading the Nigerian Medical Association to becoming a pioneer Vice-Chancellor reminds us that purposeful service creates opportunities for greater impact.
May history remember you not only as the university's first Vice-Chancellor but also as a foundation-builder whose vision and dedication helped shape an enduring institution.
It was an honour to serve with you, and it remains a privilege to celebrate you.
Congratulations, my dear Professor Bala Mohammed Audu.
With deep respect, personal gratitude, and warmest felicitations,
Dr. Benjamin Oluwatosin Eno-Obong Olowojebutu
Former First Vice-President, Nigerian Medical Association
2024–2026
